Vol 3. Gratitude

Instead of pulling a look together I decided to take a moment and reflect on what tomorrow is all about...remembering what we're thankful for. Two thousand and nine has been a challenging year, not just for me, but for everyone. Losing my job was an unfortunate experience, but it brought me back to my roots in Indiana. I faced my passed, I dealt with my present, and now I'm planning for my future. I quickly realized what I wanted and didn't want in my life and I changed it. However, if it weren't for the following, I don't know where I would be right now...

My family--helping me move back from Atlanta, inviting me over or paying for my dinners, being there when my niece was born, watching my nephew get cuter and cuter, providing a home, picking me up when I am stranded, providing laughs, advice, and love.

My friends--someone to laugh with, cry with, console with, drink with, and experience new things with. Friends often teach us life's most valuable lessons. We not only learn more about them, but more about ourselves.

My job--I am around fun, creative, and amazing people. Although the job itself isn't the greatest, I am thankful for having a job at all and being in such a positive, energetic environment.

My health--I am a happy and healthy person and I can always be grateful for that.

My family's health

HAPPY THANKSGIVING EVERYONE! REMEMBER WHAT YOU'RE THANKFUL FOR EACH AND EVERY DAY!

Vol 2. Country Chic

Country Chic

I love this look because it looks put together, but like I didn't try too hard. The headband gives a little bit of sparkle, the bag looks 60's vintage, and the dress and cardigan look cute and comfortable. Perfect for meeting old friends and making new ones. Cheers!

T'was the night before Thanksgiving Vol. 1- Maneater

T'was the night before Thanksgiving

Thanksgiving's approaching which happens to be my absolute favorite holiday. A time to retreat back to my childhood home, visit old friends, and gobble as much home cooking as I can. The night before Thanksgiving is usually spent at local bars, catching up with friends from high school and maybe even meeting those I never really talked to. Although, sometimes it's running into an ex, in that case you'd want to look your absolute best. No matter what your tradition I am going to give you a few ideas of what to wear to fit any situation and maybe throw in a few surprises along the way. You don't want to miss this series! Stay tuned for volumes 2 and 3.
Maneater-The great thing about going out the night before T-giving is you know there is a slight chance you may run into a former ex and (depending on your stalker-status) who may have a new girlfriend he's bringing home to the meet the parents. Not that you still want the loser anyway, you still want to want him to want you. Make him drool on this bib necklace by topshop and don't forget to make the girlfriend green with envy when you shake her hand with British Racing Green digits.

Christmas Eve

Christmas Eve

Items in this set:
J Crew top, $250
Miu Miu shoes, $399
I saw this dress in the JCrew window yesterday and immedately ran inside to get my hands on it. I have to have it! This is definately on my stalker list to wear for the holiday parties this season. It's black suitable for any and every occasion and the tiered ruffles easily hide anything that might want to protrude from stuffing my face with spring rolls and crab dip. Red satin pumps or a statement necklace with a red satin bow would add some cheery flair. I would keep hair simple by pulling it back into a messy side bun. Red lips a must!

If I were going on holiday...

...this would be the suit I would be sipping my pina coladas in! It's bohemian, sexy, and chic. I can just see my Lincoln Park After Dark pedi shining in the sand right now :)

Hair Today, Gone Tomorrow? Read on for shiny, healthy, fabulous hair!

My hair hasn't always been the greatest. When I was little it was fine and frizzy. In adolescence it turned into full, but still fine, naturally curly hair. By my twenties my hair has seen some hardship, probably due to my "always wanting to be blonder and straighter" mindset. So I can say I have had a little bit of every problem; how to make curly hair, full beautiful curls, and fight frizz, how to make curly hair straight, how to grow back damaged, broken hair (from the heat from flat irons and blow dryers), and how to make those beautiful waves all the celebs are sporting.

Now, after working in a hair salon and having access to products and services, my hair is beginning to feel fuller and healthier than ever before. Read on for some tips and tricks I have picked up over the years and in the last 2 months.

Tip #1: Don't try to be something you're not, enhance what you've got.

  • Ask your stylist the best hair colors for your complexion and eye color. If they are good at what they do, they should know what color will make your eyes and skin pop. If you go in saying you want to be a red head and you don't listen your stylist's input, then you might be doing a disgrace to yourself. Think about what celebrity you resemble color wise and look at the different things they have done with their hair over the years. Find what stands out to you and go from there. The celebs you see here have the hottest, most desired hair, this season!

  • Don't try to fight the texture of your hair. It is only damaging it more. If your hair is curly experiment to find out how to make the best curly hair possible, if your hair is straight don't put gel in it, scrunch it and make nastly wavy hair, figure out how to give your hair the best, most volumous, blowout ever. If your hair is in between your work is cut out for you. You probably have some frizz to fight and use every tool known to man to create straight, wavy, or curly hair. You will need to know how to prevent heat damage.

Tip #2: Use the best products you can afford.

  • I didn't realize how much products really make a difference. I thought it was all tied into marketing and status, but that is not the case. The other thing I've learned is the better the product, the less fillers it has and the more wholesome rich nutrients your hair needs. After saying that Kerastase is the best product I have used yet. Most products average $34 whether it's shampoo or a styling product, but it is worth it. If you can't afford to have all Kerastase than I would start out with shampoo and conditioner and one top priority styling product. It's worth the splurge. No one wants to wake up to a bad hair day.

Tip #3: Damage Control

  • Take a good look in the mirror and assess the healthiness of your hair. Signs of damage include; frayed ends, broken pieces at the scalp (probably standing up after you just flat ironed it), brittle and dry. If you have questions consult your stylist for more input. Now lets think about priority. Frayed ends can be cut, but broken pieces at the scalp have to grow. Pay close attention to how much is broken/growing in. This is the hair you want to nuture the most. At the salon we recommend using the protein (green) Kerastase line for this. You will want a shampoo/conditioner rich in protein and a heat protectant cream to put on your hair before styling. This all makes your hair stronger and protects it from the heat, so more does not break off. We also recommend taking a supplement called Biotin which makes your hair and nails grow faster. If your hair is mostly just brittle, dry, and dull we recommend adding moisture. This is the orange line in Kerastase. Again, there are many great products, but a good conditioning mask, moisture heat protectant, and shine serum should do the trick.

Tip #4: Tools of the trade

  • Boar bristle round brush- best for smoothing hair while blowing out. Proper technique creates volume, shine, and wave.

  • Flat iron- try to use sparingly, but it's the only thing to give stick straight hair. This tool can be very damaging so always spray on a heat protector before ironing.

  • Diffuser- a gadget that attaches to a blowdryer to direct heat or heat flow. The flat nozel is great for when you are using a round brush to direct heat in a solid line and eliminate frizz. The big round diffusers (often with spikes) are great for curly hair. After applying curl product, scrunch hair with a towel to soak in extra product or water and create ringlets. Hang head upside down and allow hair to sit in the diffuser. Move over head until 85% dry. Allow hair to air dry the rest of the way.

  • Blowdryer- I recommend at 2600 watt blowdryer. Nothing works as good as these. Usually sold in salons, Ulta, or Sephora. Not only is it faster drying time, but it eliminates frizz as well.

  • Tease comb- essential for high volume hair. Create small sections around crown of the head and back comb using a tease comb. Spray with hairspray. Lightly comb top layer to smooth and spray again.

  • Curling iron- Hot Tools curling iron is the best. It gets the hottest and has a dial so you can control temperature. If you are still curling your hair the way your mother taught you stop now! It fries your ends and looks like Goldilocks. Use the wrap around technique: unclamp the iron and wrap hair around the barrel (making sure hair is turning away from your face) hold hair there for 5-8 seconds and release. Notice you never clamp the barrel down. This takes practice and I'm sure you can Google the exact instructions. This is definately worth knowing!

Heart 2 Heart

If I looked back on the numerous diaries and journals I have kept over the years there is a common theme I could find in all of them: finding balance. I don't know if everyone struggles with balancing the different aspects of their lives or if they are simply okay with one aspect ruling the others. Maybe most people are balanced and don't think of it as much as I do. I don't really know. All I do know is I'm tired of saying it, writing it and thinking it. I want to DO it and I can't think of a better time than the present.

What I mean by balance is having equal parts of health/fitness, relationships and career in my life. The most challenging for me is the health and fitness part. I'm tall, so I have that going for me, but I definately could lose about 15 pounds and tone up. I have been reading fitness magazines since I was probably 13 years old. I know how to do it. I know it's a mathmatical function (burn more calories than you take in), but for some reason I let this fail me. Especially living back in Indiana makes it so hard to eat well, because honestly that is all there is to do here. Kidding, kind of. Relationships come and go and a lot is out of my control (for the romantic ones at least), but all I can do is nuture the ones that I have, be a good friend, and hope that the other is there for me as well. I'm not so much focused on this, except for the simple fact to maintain, love, and just be. However, a career, is something I have to work harder at more than ever. I am working on striving to be the best at where I currently work, as well as, writing and finding time for my passion. I have so much that goes through my head everyday and it's a shame I don't take the time to share with you all about it. I want to market my site and start writing for columns in local newspapers/magazines. This is another area I need to work on.

Maybe it's unrealistic but I want to be beautiful on the inside and the outside. I want to be a exceptional business woman. I want to wake up every day and be happy to be alive and to know that I have done everything I could to accomplish my dreams and make a great life for myself and eventually my family. I also know a lot of that has to do with being at peace spiritually with myself. It's not about the materialistic things that I own, but it's more about loving myself for the person that I am. I have high expectations for myself and I don't want to fail. I won't settle.

Fall for Peace, Love, and Fashion

Fall 09

Fall is finally here. I can really feel it now. The temperature has dropped and I have been raiding my closet for something a bit warmer to wear. We are finally out of that "is it summer or is it fall and can I still wear white?" mode. I LOVE IT!!! Fall is all about texture; rich colors, leather, suede, knits, and plaids.

This season you are going to find bohemian inspired trends puking all over stores everywhere. I think it might have something to do with the 40th anniversary of Woodstock, but I don't know? Moccasins (slippers and boots with fringe) are really making a statement. I know, because I live in Indiana now, which actually might mean that moccasins are really out now? Anyway, it's what you love that counts. Bohemian headbands are popular too. I haven't actually seen many brave souls sporting them here, so if you want to be a trendsetter in the midwest bohemian headbands are the way to go. Just look at the picture of Nicole Richie above! Don't forget the shootie. I learned that word when I went to Baker's the other day. It's not a boot or a shoe, it's a shootie! These are the shoes that look like short boots with toes. I love them. They punch up any dress, skinny jean, or tights. For a fresh look pair them with knee high decorative socks.

Stay tuned for my favorite trends and life's daily luxes. It's going to be a great year!!! As always, I look forward to hearing from my readers, so feel free to comment, post or email me!

What Luxe do you own that goes beyond its material value?

Everyone has something of material value that extends far past what it actually is and into a meaningful and sentimental thought that reminds them of a person, a place, or a time in their life. Or maybe it was a signal to keep going and strive for that particular goal that seemed so far out of reach. For example, the Christmas before I graduated High School my mom gave me a snow globe that played "New York, New York."  Though the actual value of the snow globe was not that much, the inspiration and feeling of looking down on the city trapped in my arms reach gave me hope of one day working there and accomplishing my dreams. I took the snow globe off to college and had set it on my nightstand to remind myself every night before drifting off to my dreams.  A few weeks before I had completed my freshman year I came back to my dorm room to find the snow globe shattered to pieces all over the floor. I was devastated. It seems so ridiculous to any other human being that I was so upset, but in a way I felt like my dreams had been shattered and that it was a sign that maybe I was too much of a small town girl to make it in a city like that.  I cried to my mom and she promised she'd buy me another snow globe. It wouldn't have been the same if she did and I never asked for it and she never bought it.

Years later, forgetting about the snow globe, I had moved to Atlanta and gotten a job with Macy's. As we all know the time right now is not the best time for retail industry and the Macy's I worked for decided to consolidate to New York. It seemed like a fabulous opportunity for me, but after calls from New York came and went to the employees surrounding me, my phone never rang. After a lot of hard work and determination (not to mention the incredible people pulling for me) I finally received a call. I figured this is my one and only opportunity. Right before my scheduled interview my co-worker walked into my cube and pulled out a present. This present was a snow globe he had someone get for him from a long time ago that plays "New York, New York" I couldn't believe it. He had no idea of my past falling out with the snow globe my mom got me. This luxe goes far beyond the actual value because it couldn't have come at a better time. It just goes to show when you think things couldn't get any worse, if you are persistent, positive, and never lose hope than things can turn out to be greater than you ever expected. Even if I never reach my dreams in New York, I know it just wasn't meant to be. Sometimes we think we know what's best for us, but everything always works out the way it was suppose to.

Now I want to know what Luxe you have that goes far beyond it's material value and has helped you in a turning point in your life or reminds you of a special time you will never forget. Click on comments and add it to my page!

Diet is a Four Letter Word

Luxe: The Daily Fix
Diets are meant to be broken. The word diet suggests a time period in which you are going to change what you eat so you can reach your goal of becoming slim and sexy for some reason or another. A diet does not suggest a change for a lifetime, but rather a time when you are going to restrict all of the "bad foods" out of your life until you see a reflection of yourself that you might be ok with. Then within 2 weeks after you have reached your goal and that chocolate cake presents itself you decide that maybe just this once, after all you have worked so hard and avoided every temptation up until now, you will indulge. That chocolate cake all of a sudden becomes the best thing you have ever tasted! Then after a fight with your boyfriend, you decide to go out to dinner with a friend and the waiter suggests a spinach artichoke dip for an appetizer. Damn it, you deserve it right? After all you have been bawling your eyes out for the last two hours and nothing sounds better than the cheesy goodness of spinach artichoke dip! You indulge again. Slowly but surely your emotions win every time and you start consuming more deliciousness, because you deserve it, and less and less physical activity. Soon you find yourself right back where you started, at the bookstore trying to find the diet book you can "live with" for the next 3 months.

I've been there done that and I by no means am close to my ideal body, however, I have found the perfect book that helps you to alter your way of life, without depriving yourself of those wonderful luxes that makes your dinner, date, or party worth while. Who can enjoy going to a wedding reception and not eating the cake or even half of the meal because it's not on your diet? Even if you're on a diet and you have been depriving yourself up until the wedding and then you decide to give in and eat the meal and cake too, you not only feel guilty, but you also remember everything that you have been missing and eventually will fall off of your diet. The book I found doesn't promise weight loss, but it does provide healthy habits for good nutrition. If you have been eating poorly and you develop these habits then you are sure to lose weight. Losing weight is about the number of calories you put in versus the number of calories you burn. There are many calorie budgets online you can find that you should abide by and a number of calories you should burn each day in order to lose a healthy 1-2 pounds per week. Check those out at www.self.com. If you are eating the foods that are good for you and developing good habits, while still allowing yourself to indulge every now and then, then you will lose weight successfully, keep it off, and not have to think about it again because you have made eating healthy a habit. The book is called The Daily Fix by Alexa L. Fishback, a writer for Women's Health magazine.

In this book she talks about what might be stopping you from losing weight in your daily life; daily soft drinks, too much sugar and cream in your morning coffee, or not enough exercise. She helps you sort out all of the "little" things you might be eating on a daily basis that are keeping you from your goals. She suggests that you develop a weekly routine and stick with it 5 days a week. When you go to work resist the candy sitting around on people's desks, bring fruits and vegetables to snack on, so you always have something to grab when you just want something to do or eat. She recommends that everyday you shoot for 5 fruits and vegetables. Trust me, when you're busy trying to fit in an apple, orange, carrots, tomatoes, and broccoli into each day you find it easier to turn down those 5 chocolate kisses that used to whisper sweet nothings into your ear. Soon you will notice you have more energy, better skin, and you can sleep better when you are replacing sweets with vitamin rich nutrients. Another good tip she suggests is besides drinking your morning coffee, drink water for every meal and in between meals. Don't drink any other caloric beverage the rest of the day, just for the 5 days a week. The best part is those other two days, the weekends when all the fun happens, you can have fun and treat yourself. Don't go overboard and know that when Monday comes you are back to The Daily Fix.

Work It Girl

Luxe: JCrew
Whether you are looking for a job or lucky enough to still have one you don't want to skimp on your professional look. The way you carry yourself at work not only affects the way other's perceive you, but it also affects the way you feel about yourself. Depending on the company's culture that you work for, or trying to work for, I have selected some trendy business-casual looks to help boost your esteem and help you land that job or promotion. Please note that sleeveless is not usually acceptable at an office, so you will want to always wear a blazer or sweater on top. The key is to stay conservative and punch up the accessories to add femininity. I really like JCrew for this concept. You can walk into their store and instantly feel fresh with their creative mix of colors and bold accessories. Their catalog is a great source of inspiration when you want to step outside the box, but still keep it professional. Their price-point is a little higher, but so is the quality. Also, because they sell a lot of basic, solid items you can wear them year after year if you take good care of them. It's definitely worth the splurge!

What Luxe Wakes You Up?

Grande skinny vanilla latte, extra foam with 2 splenda or 2 bottles of water and a 50 minute spin class? I want to know what gets you out of bed in the morning. What luxe wakes you up? Post your comments below!

Spring Fling with American Eagle

Weekends
concerts on the lawn • dining alfresco • festivals • reading • falling in love • fireworks • carnivals • searching for seashells • playing in the park • fishing • boutique shopping • cruising • bike rides • picnics

Luxe: American Eagle
This is my new found love. You probably remember American Eagle as the store that tried to be like Abercrombie & Fitch. Their product mix was similar; khakis, plaids, graphic tees, and flip-flops--and heck, even the AE, AF logos were almost the same. You'd have to look twice to see which was which. Well, not anymore! American Eagle has finally found a way to differentiate themselves. From their LIVE YOUR LIFE brand, bold colors, trendy, yet still casual merchandise, American Eagle is my pick for spring weekend wear.  Their low price-points still remain the same, not to mention they are always having a great promotion like, "Buy one top and get the 2nd top 50% off." If you don't have a lot of cash in the bank, but want to find something inexpensive and cute to wear this weekend, then I recommend you run to American Eagle right now and give it another chance. I bet you'll be surprised and happy that you found this little luxe.
